2011 Event Dates

Below are the event dates for the 2011 season.

Saturday, May
14: Lighthouse clean up and painting, 10:00 a.m. to whenever. We clean the inside of the lighthouse tower, engine room and keeper’s quarters in preparation for the Open House season ........... Join us there!

Saturday, May 21: Rain date for clean up/painting and volunteer orientation, 10:00 a.m.
We host an orientation for all new and returning volunteers (docents) to help familiarize or re-familiarize them with the responsibilities of being a volunteer at the lighthouse. (This weekend also serves as a rain date for our clean up event.)

Saturday, May 2
8: First Open house – we are open every weekend through Columbus Day from 10am – 5pm, weather, tides and volunteer availability permitting. (We always need volunteers!) Docents are available to point out the various features of the lighthouse as well as answer any questions concerning the lighthouse and its history. Lighthouse-related items are also available for purchase in the gift shop.

When visiting the lighthouse, remember that you are walking out 7/8ths of a mile into the ocean on uneven blocks of granite, so please wear comfortable shoes and dress in layers. Also, there are no restrooms in the lighthouse and pets are not permitted inside. A donation of $1.00 per visitor is suggested to climb the tower and children need to be at least 42 inches tall to go up.

30: Memorial Day - Open House from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

aturday, June 18: Light to Light race – This event has been postponed. Check back for more info.

Sunday, June 19: Lobster Boat Races in Rockland Harbor. Last year over 50 lobster boats filled the Harbor with excitement – Rockland Breakwater has the best viewing spot. Please check the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce for details (596-0376) Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Friday, June 24
: We are sponsoring an evening sunset cruise on the PV Elizabeth Anne from Port Clyde visiting Lighthouses in Penobscot Bay. Please click here for more info.

Saturday & Sunday, June 2
5 & 26: Midcoast Maine Lighthouse Challenge- a chance to visit many Lighthouses in the Penobscot Bay in one weekend. During this two-day event participants are challenged to visit numerous lighthouses in the midcoast area as well as the Maine Lighthouse Museum in Rockland. When you visit each site you will receive a souvenir token commemorating your visit. Those completing the challenge are entered into a drawing for a special prize. Bonus challenges - a sunset lighthouse cruise, tours of other lighthouse-related venues - vary from year to year. Click here for more information on this year's event.

Monday, July 4: Independence Day Open House 10-5.

Friday,July 15: Open House 1-5 – Windjammer Parade of Sails – about 16 area traditional schooners and other sailboats "parade" around the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse in full sail – a rare sight to remember and reminiscent of days gone by. Tuesday, July 19 through Thursday, July 21: Friendship Sloop Days – great race viewing from the Breakwater.

Wednesday,
August 3 through Sunday, August 7: Lobster Festival in Rockland. Extra open houses possible W/Th/F – check later

Saturday, August 2
7: Maine Masters swim around the Lighthouse from the Beach near Marie Reed Park at the end of Samoset Road.

Monday, September
5: Labor Day - Open House from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Saturday, September 17
: Maine Lighthouse Day – many additional lighthouse open, including ours.

Monday, October 1
0: Columbus Day - Open House from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Last open house of the season!

Saturday, December 10: On December 10, 2011, Gary Sredzienski will undertake an Icy Swim for Lighthouses...this time he will swim 3.3 miles across Rockland Harbor, Maine!
